The island of Korčula, South Adriatic

The hypnotic chorus of vineyard crickets in the early autumn caught my ear one evening. Having only small handy recorder with me I decided to get to know one particular cricket, which was hanging all alone away from the bunch in the Cebalo-Popić field close by the road.

His stamina and unusual round intonation were very charming.
This is the sonic story of his life and death set in three acts.
Overall recording is 133 min long in which one can hear acoustics of the whole Lumbarda field, once an aquatory and nowadays home of the most interesting autohton white grapes.

“Lumbarda is renowned for the Grk vine, made from the identically named indigenous type of grapes that grow well in the sandy vineyards of the village. It is not known whether Grk got its name from its refined bitter taste (grk means bitter in Croatian) or from the Greeks, who established a settlement in the area back in the 3rd century B.C.

An archaeological monument from that period, the Psephism, records the foundation of Lumbarda and the early years of its wine-growing and wine-making already 2,300 years ago. (Excerpt from the text about Lumbarda vine production, by Maja Cebalo)
